As a Ph.D. Electrical Engineer and an avid sailor, I've owned 4
large sailboats and designed & installed power management systems for them all. These have included engine alternator upgrades, solar,
wind and auxiliary generator installations. I've cruised for a year in
Mexico and faced the realities of power limitations all over the world. You can't work productively if you are sweating or cold. I've installed heat and air on boats and used them to extend my cruising season. As a Computer Scientist, I'm familiar with networks, storage, software and computing systems and have worked with them for decades. Now I'd like to share these experiences and build a new business initiative around them.
As a member of the Apache Software Foundation, I've been active in a global remote open software community for several years. Prior to that, I worked for Collabnet, a company building tools to support globally distributed software development. I'm well qualified to telecommute and have used a variety of virtual telepresence tools for years. Going forward, I plan to stay active in Apache and continue to work with MiHIN while operating from a mobile platform at increasing distances from my home port of Erie, PA.
After fitting out my Beneteau 423 Northern Lights with necessary equipment, we made a fall voyage down the Erie Canal and the Intracostal Waterway to demonstrate feasibility and seek out new business opportunities. The trip south was wonderful and in May 2013 we reversed direction to sail, offshore this time, from Florida to New York.
Another trip south is planned for September. You can follow our progress at Northern Lights Sailing.
